How to Talk to Your Parents About Their Finances (Part 2 of 3 part series)

As adults, we find it difficult to have the ‘money talk’ with our parents because we feel it is not our place. We even worry they may think we are being nosey. When in reality, they may be very glad you asked because they have been meaning to talk with you about their finances.

It is extremely important to have conversations about financial matters sooner rather than later. Proper planning will help protect family assets, eliminate unnecessary administrative difficulties and minimize potential disputes with family members before it is too late.

The “Financial Conversations with Your Parents Checklist” includes a recommended list of topics to cover when you have this discussion. We recommend using it for your family meetings as part of your long-term planning discussions.

We encourage you to review this checklist before any initial conversations, and then use it as a conversation starter for your long-term planning discussions.

This blog post is part two of a three-part series. Next Monday, we will be sharing an additional resource to help you discuss finances with your parents.
